RICA Video Performance Assessment

There are two RICA assessment options:

  • RICA Video Performance Assessment
  • RICA Written Examination

Passing either assessment represents successful completion of the RICA requirement.

The RICA Video Performance Assessment offers candidates the option of an evaluation based on actual classroom performance rather than a written examination. Candidates who choose the Video Performance Assessment create and submit video recordings of themselves teaching reading.

Format
3 video packet submissions , each of which consists of
  • an instructional context form

Video Packet Submissions

The RICA Video Performance Assessment requires the candidate to prepare three video packets, each of which includes (a) an Instructional Context Form, on which the candidate provides information relevant to the video-recorded instruction, such as information about the students and a lesson plan; (b) a ten-minute video recording of the candidate providing reading instruction to students; and (c) a Reflection Form, on which the candidate provides an appraisal of the video-recorded instruction, suggestions for further or alternative instructional strategies, and similar information.

For one video packet, the candidate must demonstrate whole-class instruction; for another, small-group instruction; and for the third, individual instruction. As detailed in the procedures manual registered candidates receive, one video packet should demonstrate competencies in RICA Domains 1 and 2, one should demonstrate competencies in RICA Domains 1 and 4, and one should demonstrate competencies in RICA Domains 1 and 5.

Express Delivery Fee

You may choose to have your materials packet mailed to you by overnight mail within two business days of receipt of your registration materials. There is an additional fee for this express delivery service. This service is not available if the address you provide on the registration form is a post office box. If you choose the express delivery option and provide a mailing address that is a post office box, your materials packet will be sent by standard mail and the express delivery fee will not be returned.

Final Submission Deadline

Because the specific requirements for preparing video packets vary by program year, video packets prepared during one program year will not satisfy the requirements for the next program year. When you register for the RICA Video Performance Assessment, you are required to prepare video packets according to the instructions in the RICA Video Performance Assessment Procedures Manual for that program year.

If you register for the RICA Video Performance Assessment during the 2020–2021 program year but do not submit your video packets to be scored by the final submission deadline of the program year (June 18, 2021), you will no longer be registered for the Video Performance Assessment and you will receive no refund or credit of any kind.

Preparing and Submitting Materials

Preparing Materials

The RICA Video Performance Assessment Procedures Manual includes specific instructions and requirements for completing the RICA Video Performance Assessment. Read the procedures manual carefully and adhere strictly to the procedures and policies for preparing your video packets for submission.

Submitting Materials

All required materials must be submitted together at one time; a partial submission will be returned to you unprocessed.

Once you have completed your three video packets, you should submit them for scoring by following the mailing procedures detailed in the RICA Video Performance Assessment Procedures Manual. Include the balance of the test fee, and mail your materials so that they are received by the submission deadline corresponding to your desired score report date.

After your submission is received, you will be sent a notice acknowledging receipt of your materials and confirming your score report date. If you have not received an acknowledgment of receipt of your materials within three weeks of submitting them, you should call (888) 793-7999 or (916) 928-4004.
